Visit Britain’s biggest gorge, take in the dramatic cliffs rising up 450ft and explore the stunning stalactite caverns below.
Created by Ice age melt-waters over millions of years, this world famous beauty spot is not only in the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a premier site of British prehistory. Once an ancient riverbed, its limestone cliffs and beautiful caves are now home to rare bats, dormice, water voles, Peregrine falcons, feral goats and rare soay sheep.
There are six great attractions to explore that form part of the Cheddar Gorge and Caves Day Ticket. All are dog and family friendly, so all two-legged and four-legged family and friends can enjoy this adventurous day out.
- The spectacular Gough’s Cave was discovered by Richard Gough in 1890, and was once home to our Stone Age ancestors some 40,000 years ago. Your visit includes a 45 minute long audio guide tour, in which you’ll learn about how, in 1903, the skeletal remains of ‘Cheddar Man’ were unearthed.
- The story of how our ancestors survived is brought to life in the Museum of Prehistory. You can see many artifacts of great historical importance. It brings together the findings from past excavations, and shows how they fit into the bigger, global history of our species.
- Our second show cave, Cox’s Cave, features the Dreamhunters multimedia experience, allowing you to walk in the footsteps of our ancestors. State of the art projectors, sound systems and lighting see the life of early man projected and brought to life on the walls of the stunning show cave.
- Once you’ve finished exploring our underground attractions, you can climb the 274 steps of Jacob’s Ladder up to the Lookout Tower, and enjoy the far-reaching, incredible views from the top of the gorge.
- If you make it up to the top, why not set out on the 3 mile Cliff-Top Walk, where you can discover the stunning flora and fauna from the local area.
- Last by not least, don’t miss Beyond the View, a cinematic journey through Cheddar Gorge from a brand new perspective offering historical insights and spectacular drone footage of the surrounding area.
If you’re looking for some adventure as part of your day out in Cheddar, you can try our Rock Climbing or Caving Rocksport Activity Sessions, bookable online. Be Bold! Be Brave!
