History
The Association of British and Irish Show Caves (ABIS) has a long-standing history of representing and supporting the interests of show caves across the British Isles. It was originally established in 1989, under the name The British Association of Show Caves (BAS). The primary aim at that time was to bring together the main show cave operators throughout Britain, fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and promoting high standards in cave presentation and conservation.
As the popularity of show caves continued to grow and the tourism industry evolved, the Association recognized the need for a broader, more inclusive approach. In 2001, the Association was expanded to incorporate leading show caves in Ireland, marking a significant step in its development.
To reflect this expanded geographic reach and membership, the organization formally changed its name to the Association of British and Irish Show Caves (ABIS). This rebranding signified a unified voice for show caves throughout both the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, encouraging cross-border cooperation and knowledge sharing within the industry.
On 2010 the Association adopted a new Constitution, which included provisions for Affiliate and Associate Members in addition to Member Caves.
